A dental examination is much more comprehensive than most people are aware. During your exam we do not only check the teeth but also the gums, tongue, lips, cheeks, tonsils, jaw joints and head/neck for any potential problems. We may also need to take x-rays to look for tooth decay and assess your bone levels to make sure you do not have any gum disease.

The reason we check the rest of the mouth and head/neck is to make sure there are no serious problems such as oral cancers.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING Examination?

At each check-up, your dentist should:

Examine your teeth, gums and mouth
Ask about your general health and any problems you’ve had with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit and will always check your mouth for signs of mouth cancer
Ask about, and give you advice on, your diet, smoking and alcohol use, and teeth-cleaning habits
Will take necessary x rays to help us reach a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan
Discuss a date for your next visit
